Awareness Workshops on Building Construction - Accessibility and usability of the built environment
Posted on: 23-05-2013

AT BOMA HOTEL, NAIROBI 23 - 24th May 2013

The National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) in conjunction with the Kenya Bureau of Standards are organizing a workshop on the 23rd to 24th May 2013 at the BOMA Hotel, Nairobi. The workshop theme is “Accessibility and Usability of the built environment for all”

The NCPWDs is a state corporation established under the Persons with Disabilities Act No.14 of 2003 to champion for the rights, rehabilitation and equalization of opportunities for persons with disabilities in Kenya.

The Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) mandate involves bringing together stakeholders to develop standards based solutions aimed at improving the quality of life for all Kenyans including persons living with disabilities. The Kenyan Standard KS ISO 21542 provides solutions on accessibility and usability of the built environment for all Kenyans.

An accessible physical environment benefits the entire society, not just persons with disabilities. The PWDS Act, 2003 Section 21 states “Persons with disabilities are entitled to a barrier- free and disability-friendly environment to enable them to have access to buildings, roads and other social amenities, and assistive devices and other equipment to promote their mobility.” Measures should be undertaken to eliminate obstacles and barriers to indoor and outdoor facilities including schools, medical facilities and workplaces. These would include not only buildings, but also footpaths, and obstacles that block the flow of pedestrian traffic.

The objective of the workshops is to create awareness on the Kenya Standard, KS ISO 21542; “Building Construction - Accessibility and usability of the built environment” that provides building users, designers, engineers, builders, building owners and managers, manufacturers, policy makers and legislators with requirements and recommendation to create a sustainable built environment which is accessible, emphasizing on accessibility by persons with disabilities.

The series of workshops will also bring to the attention of the stakeholders Section 21 of the PWDs Act, 2003 on Accessibility and mobility as quoted above. All new and old buildings intended for use by the public should meet the requirements set out in KS ISO 21542 as per PWDs Act 2003.

NB: Policy makers may attend only the SESSION dealing with policy and management issues.

More information and registration form for the stakeholder awareness workshops can be downloaded here.

  • KEBS celebrates the 43rd world standards day - 16th october 2012
World Standards Dayis celebrated each year on 14th October to pay tribute to the efforts of thousands of experts worldwide that collaborate with International Standards Bodies like (International Electro-technical Commission (IEC), International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and International telecommunications Union (ITU),to develop International Standards that facilitate trade, spread knowledge and promote technologicaladvances.

The theme this year is, "Less waste, better results - Standards increase efficiency".Standards are crucial for increasing efficiency, while efficiency is crucial for success in today’s challenging and competitive economic environment. This issue has drawn a lot of attention as global economies are challenged with sustainability and financial uncertainty. Optimization of resources in any organization provides a foundation for better results. Efficiency is the ability to achieve organizational objectives by implementing processes in production or services that facilitate provision of safe, functional and quality products with minimal waste, expense, or unnecessary effort. Efficiency helps organizations meet their goals as they maximize profits.
