  Motor Vehicle Inspection - Notice of Extension of Quality Inspection Services Inc. Japan (QISJ) and AutoTerminal Japan (ATJ) Contracts.

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN to all those importing Motor Vehicles into Kenya, that the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) has extended its contracts for inspection of motor vehicles with Quality Inspection Services Inc. Japan (QISJ) and AutoTerminal Japan (ATJ) respectively for a period of 90 days (unless otherwise advised) with effect from 16th January 2015.

This has been occasioned by the pending hearing and determination of requests for review filed in the Public Procurement Administrative Review Board of Kenya on the recently concluded International tenders for Motor Vehicle Inspection.

  PUBLIC NOTICE ON NEW KENYA STANDARDS FOR METHANOL

This is to bring to the attention of the Public, Importers and Users of Methanol of two new standards for Methanol which have been approved by the National Standards Council.

The Standards are:-

1. KS 2582-1: 2014. Kenya Standard on Safety of Chemical Products - Code of Practice Part 1 Safety of Methanol: First Edition.

2. KS 2583:2014 Kenya Standard - Denatonium Benzoate in Alcohols Test Method: First Edition.

Clause 4.1.7 of the Kenya Standard KS 2582-1 Code of Practice Part I for the Safety of Methanol requires All grades of Methanol except those meant for Laboratory use to be denatured with Denatonium Benzoate to prevent oral intake by vulnerable consumers as detailed in KS 2582-1:2014.

All Stakeholders of Methanol are therefore expected to acquire the new standards and implement the requirement alongside the other specifications with immediate effect.

  PUBLIC NOTICE ON REVIEWED STANDARDS FOR STEEL BARS

KEBS wishes to bring to the attention of the public, manufacturers and users of Steel Bars that the reviewed standards of Steel Bars have been approved by the National Standards Council.

The Standards are:-

1. KS 573: 2014 Kenya Standard - High yield steel bars for the Reinforcement of concrete - Specification: Fourth Edition.

2. KS 104: 2014 Kenya Standard - Specification for cold rolled steel sections, Third Edition.

3. KS 574:2014 Kenya Standard - Steel fabric for reinforcement of concrete - Specification, Fourth Edition

4. KS ISO 6934-1:1991 Kenya Standard - Steel for the pre-stressing of concrete - Part 1: General requirements, Second Edition.

5. KS ISO 6934-5:1991 Kenya Standard - Steel for the pre-stressing of concrete - Part 5: Hot-rolled steel bars with or without subsequent processing, Second Edition.

In all the above standards, the review has introduced the requirement for the steel bars to be branded/embossed with the manufacturers or importers Trademark. This is to ensure traceability of the products to the manufacturers/importers or owners/source.

The implementation of this requirement took effect from 01/01/2015 as was agreed with the manufacturers in a consultative meeting held in September 2014.

Users of Steel Bars are now alerted through this Public Notice to verify the branding on the Bars during purchase.

  PUBLIC NOTICE ON INSPECTION OF IMPORTED GOODS AT SOURCE (COUNTRY OF ORIGIN)

We wish to notify all Importers, Manufacturers and the Public that with effect from 18th January 2015, the following Companies/Inspection Agencies are the ones contracted by KEBS to inspect imported goods destined to Kenya for a period of 36 months.

  • Socie’te’ Ge’ne’rale de Surveillance SA( SGS)
  • Intertek International Ltd
  • China Certification and Inspection (Group) Inspection Co. Ltd (CCIC)
  • Bureau Veritas (BV)

This is in line with Legal Notice No. 78 of 15th July 2005 on the Pre-Export Verification of Conformity (PVoC) to standards programme.  Other details like the PVoC list of products and the regional allocation of the inspection agencies/companies are available in the KEBS Website: www.kebs.org

IMPORTERS OF USED MOTOR VEHICLES
We wish to inform all imports of used motor vehicles including returning residents of the general public that in observance of the 8(eight) year requirement, only Right Hand Drive (RHD) motor vehicles whose year of first registration is 2004 or later shall be allowed into the country as from 1st January 2011.

NOTICE TO ALL MANUFACTURERS
The standards Levy Order, 1990, gazetted by the minister for industry vide Legal Notice 267 of 1990 came into operation on 1st July 1990.
On 26th Nov, 1999, the standards Levy order, 1990 was amended vide legal notice 183 by the Minister for Tourism, Trade and Industry and came into operation during the financial year 1999/2000. ............Read more
