The Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) operates a Product Certification Scheme in line with its functions of developing quality standards, ascertaining compliance with such standards, and controlling the application and use of the standardization / Quality Mark and other distinctive Marks. |
The Diamond Mark of Quality scheme is voluntary. Companies with this mark automatically qualify for the standardization mark and need not apply. |
| The process of acquisition involves application, assessment, consistent compliance of the products to standards and approval to grand permit to use the mark by the permits approvals committee. Issue of the permit plus soft copy of the mark. Products bearing the Diamond Mark of Quality need not apply for the other Standardization Marks. Manufacturers and importers who opt to apply for the other product certification marks in addition to the Diamond Mark will automatically get other marks free. The cost of the Diamond Mark of Quality is Kshs. 55,000 per product per year. |

Requirements for Diamond mark of Quality
In summary the steps towards the Diamond Mark Certification are:
- Application
- Audit of the firm
- Sampling and Testing
- Review
- Approval by PAC
- Issuance of Permit
- Surveillance
Permit Fees
- Kshs. 55,000 per product per brand for local companies.
- Kshs. 200,000 or USD 2,500 per product brand for foreign firms. In addition, assessment, subsistence and air ticketing allowance shall be payable
Form STA/1: Application for Grand/ Renewal of Diamond Mark
Form STA/3: Factory Assessment Application fee is payable.
- Record of Compliance with the relevant standard- at least three test results for the last one year in operation.
- Evidence of existence of a scheme of surveillance and control of the production system.
- Assessment for product certification by KEBS auditors.
- Evidence of control of:
- Incoming raw materials
- In process
- Final product
- Quality and testing records
- Existence of in-house Laboratory
- Plant house keeping / Hygiene
- Environmental consideration
- Product labeling
Positive recommendation following the compilation of the audit report.
Commitment by the applicant on adherence to the rules and regulations governing product certification at any given time.
Approval for Diamond Mark
- The auditors’ recommendation is passed to the KEBS Permits Approval Committee.
- Where the applicant is successful, a permit is issued and is valid for 3 years. During the validity period, surveillance is carried out on the product Quantity. Annual permit fee is paid.
- The permit for use of the KEBS Quality Mark is renewed annually.
The permit holder shall ensure that all products which carry the Mark comply with the specified quality requirements. |
