Metrology

Metrology, the science of measurement , is concerned with the ways and means by which measurements are carried out (procedures; equipment), the accuracy to which they are determined (errors/ uncertainties) and to a lesser extent the use to which they are put (application).

The Kenya Bureau of Standards Metrology laboratories became an associate member of the General Conference of Weights and Measures (CGPM) of the Metre Convention and  a signatory of the Committee of Weights and Measures Mutual Recognition Arrangement (CIPM-MRA)  in the year 2002.
The Metre Convention created the Intrernational Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM)  and set the framework for global collaboration in the science of measurement including its industrial, commercial and societal application.
The original aim of the Meter Convenction in 1875 was  the worldwide uniformity of measurements which remains as important today.

ROLE OF MEASUREMENT
Measurement is one of the key requirements for quality products and services which not only affect the users' well being but also affect the national economic development through trade.
If a standard of quality is set, there must be ways of measuring or testing whether products meet the set specifications norms. By certifying the measurement procedures and the measuring instruments used we can ensure that the manufacturers produce goods that meet the requirements of the said standard. Therefore to certify achievement of quality it is important that measurement equipment be constantly calibrated.
The Metrology laboratories at KEBS are equipped to disseminate units of measurements to users and develop metrology infrastructure to meet national measurement needs.
