Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) was established in July 1974. The KEBS Board of Directors is known as the National Standards Council (NSC). It is the policy-making body for supervising and controlling the administration and financial management of the Bureau. The Managing Director is the Chief Executive responsible for the day-to-day administration of the Bureau within the broad guidelines formulated by the NSC.

1974. KEBS was founded by the enhancement of the CAP 496of the laws of Kenya.
1980. KEBS moved its headquarters’ to South C.
1981. Metrology was initiated.
1985. Testing services were offered.
1985. KEBS Coast region was opened.
1995. KEBS Kisumu office was opened.
1995. Legal inspection was commissioned under legal notice no.78.
2003. KEBS developed its 1st strategic plan.
2005. KEBS signs performance contract with d government. 2005. Pre-Export verification of conformity was initiated

STANDARDS DEVELOPMENT   
Standards development through technical committee process 18 months
Systematic review of standards 5 years
Sale of standards 5 days
METROLOGY AND TESTING.  
Carry out accurate calibration and testing of all equipment & samples submitted and release test/calibration reports/certificate.                14 days  
Collect samples from customer premises 2 days
Respond to site calibration or testing. 14  days
Respond to request for quotations (RFQ’s)  2  days
QUALITY ASSURANCE AND INSPECTION
Inspection of services and product after a request  3 weeks
Release of test report after collection of samples 4 weeks
Issue of standardization mark permits from date of application   8 weeks
Issuance of new diamonds mark permits 9 months
Acknowledge receipt of complaints    5 days
Resolve and respond to appeals and enquiries. 7 days
IMPORT INSPECTION
Forward/issue test report to the importer  1 week
Where testing is desired samples drawn from consignment shall be transmitted to the laboratory.  3 days
PRE-EXPORT VERIFICATION OF CONFORMITY (PVOC) TO STANDARDS
Respond to PVOC complaints 3 days
Transmit IDF information to PVOC partners on daily basis 1day
KEBS CERTIFICATION BODY (KEBSCB)
Acknowledge application for certification 7 Days
NATIONAL QUALITY INSTITUTE (NQI).
Acknowledge request for training 7 days
Issue Certificate after completion of training and payment 14 days
GENERAL SERVICES.
Paying of creditors after delivery and acceptance of goods 30 days
Acknowledge communication (letter or e-mail) 24 hrs
Respond to complaints / appeal.   7 days

Office Hours: Monday - Friday: 0800 - 1300 hrs, Lunch Break: 1300 - 1400 hrs, 1400 - 1700 hrs
